Grown-up sheet · Level 3 · Snack Island · Big game
This is the second island of Level 3: taking away (subtracting from up to 5, including down to zero).
How to use it
- Watch the video together with your child. Don't give them the answer. If they stay quiet, wait for Pipo to say it.
- For each challenge, mark just one box:
- ✓ if they answered on their own, before the circle emptied.
- ½ if they answered late or with help.
- ✗ if they didn't answer or got it wrong.
- Pause the video to write things down if you need to.
- At the end, look at the "What to review?" table.
What to watch for on this island:
- Counting what's left, not what went away: whatever is taken away stays marked with a dotted line. If they count those too, they aren't yet separating out "what's left".
- Zero: "none are left" is an answer. If they stay quiet when nothing is left, ask "How many are left?" with real objects.
- The sign: from stop 3 on, sums and subtractions are mixed. Ideally they look at the sign before counting.

What to do next:
- Everything mastered: move on to the next island (parts of a number).
- One block not mastered: rewatch those videos for 2 or 3 days.
- Two or more blocks not mastered: it's worth spending one more week on this island, and reviewing Basket Island (putting together) as well.
Common mistakes at this age:
- Saying how many went away (challenges 1 to 3): they say "one" instead of "three". With real objects, have them set aside what's taken away and point: "And here, how many are there?"
- Adding instead of subtracting (challenges 5 and 6): they didn't look at the sign. Play "plus or minus" with toys: a grown-up says the sign and the child puts together or takes away.
- Staying quiet at zero (challenge 8): marking ½ at first is normal. Try it again with cookies: "I eat all three… how many are left?"
