How to use it

  1. Watch the video together with your child. Don't give them the answer. If they stay quiet, wait for Pipo to say it.
  2. For each challenge, mark just one box:
    • ✓ if they answered on their own, before the circle emptied.
    • ½ if they answered late or with help.
    • ✗ if they didn't answer or got it wrong.
  3. Pause the video to write things down if you need to.
  4. At the end, look at the "What to review?" table.

What to watch for on this island:

  • Counting everything or counting on: at first it's normal for them to count everything from one. What this island aims for is that, if they already know there are three, they keep going "four, five". Make a note if they do, even if it doesn't change the box.
  • With fingers: counting on fingers is fine in any challenge. It's a strategy, not cheating.
  • The signs: ideally they read "two plus one" without help. If they only say the numbers, ask: "What does the plus mean?"

What to review?

Rule: a block is mastered if the child got at least one challenge with ✓ and none with ✗.

· In all 1–2 Stop 1: "Learn" and "Play more" (M15-S1-A, M15-S1-J2)
· Five-frame and fingers 3–4 Stop 2: "Learn" and "Play" (M15-S2-A, M15-S2-J1)
· Written sums 5–6 Stop 3: "Learn" and "Play more" (M15-S3-A, M15-S3-J2)
· Putting-together stories 7–8 Stop 4: "Learn" and "Play" (M15-S4-A, M15-S4-J1)
· Pipo made a mistake! 9–10 Stop 5: "Learn" and "Play" (M15-S5-A, M15-S5-J1)

What to do next:

  • Everything mastered: move on to the next island (taking away).
  • One block not mastered: rewatch those videos for 2 or 3 days.
  • Two or more blocks not mastered: it's worth spending one more week on this island. Taking away builds on putting together.

Common mistakes at this age:

  • Counting only one group (challenges 1 and 2): they say "two" instead of "three". With real objects, have them push the two piles together before counting.
  • Counting the same thing twice (challenges 1 to 3): touch each object as you count it, or put each one on a plate as you count it.
  • Choosing the sum by the total, not by the groups (challenge 6): 2 + 2 also makes four. Ask them "How many red ones are there? And blue ones?"
  • Saying "yes" to everything Pipo says (challenges 9 and 10): marking ½ at first is normal. Play at saying wrong sums on purpose so they can catch you.
